Kidney problem is one thing that no pet owner wants to hear. But if it ever happens, the best thing they can do is to find a way to deal with it. Feeding the dog with low protein dog food is usually one of the recommendation given to begin with. A suitable supplement through traditional brands may be good as other option for dog owner if they think that specialized food is overpriced. Phosphorous contain in low protein dog food is very little. Dogs can not consume too much phosphorous if they have kidney problems. If dogs with kidney problems have too much phosphorous they may get hyperphosphatemia that is an electrolyte imbalance. And if the dog untreated that will cause complete renal failure. To aasume that the dog don’t die from complications, the dog have to be placed on dialysis.

Low protein dog food will limits the production of uremic toxins. When the kidneys are function normally, they created the byproducts that are uremic toxins. Those toxins get excreted when dogs are urinated for normal dogs, but not for dogs with kidney problems. And low protein dog food will withhold the large amount of protein to limit the overall productions of those toxins. And the excretion process will get easier because the kidney only have to deal with small number of toxins.

Low protein dog food can also reduces nausea. Low protein dog food generating very few uremic toxins to begin with, and that prevent the problem of nausea, because when uremic toxins build up in the body, the dog will feel fatigue and nausea, which sometimes can even cause them to throw up.
